You made the transition. You’ve gone from working outside the home (or being a stay at home mom) to now working from home.
Now, what do you do?
You’ve got the “mom” part down, but what about the work? How do you get started earning money from home? What is the best home business to start? Should you find a home-based job or is direct sales a better option?
And what about balancing it all? What is the best work at home mom routine?
To be a successful work at home mom, here are 5 things you should include in your plan for your first year working from home:
#1 – Establish a work from home routine
It’s no secret that working from home is different from your 9 to 5 routine. I’ve found it actually takes more discipline and organization to work from home than in a corporate or business environment.
There are so many things vying for your attention at home–kids, laundry, cooking. There’s no boss issuing deadlines or making sure you actually complete your work. YOU are the boss so it’s up to you to make sure you succeed.
By creating a flexible routine, you can stay better focused on your tasks and increase your chances of success. Julianne Alverez, from Our Milk Money, offers this suggestion,
“It’s a good idea to set your alarm for the same time each weekday morning and to head to the home office/computer at approximately the same time each day.”
This may mean waking up earlier, before the kids awake, or staying up a little late after their bedtime. You may also find that you can complete small tasks while the kids eat lunch, play or take a nap. By establishing a routine, you begin to treat your home business more like a business and less like a hobby. Post your schedule and review it with your family so they can support you in your decision to work from home.
#2 – Identify how to make money from home
Now that you have a routine in place, it’s time to nail down your ideal business venture. Is direct sales a good fit for you? Or do you want to start your own home business? Perhaps blogging is the way you want to earn money. How do you know which to choose?
Start by writing down all of the things you enjoy doing–maybe it’s writing, or designing, or crafts. Next, identify which hobbies or skills can be used to earn money.

#3 – Start a blog
Maybe building a home business isn’t for you, but you do like writing and social media. A blog is a great way to earn money while doing what you love. There are countless stories of women who started a blog as a social outlet, and ended up replacing their full-time income (plus more!) from it.
I started my blog years ago because I loved writing, and it quickly grew into my main source of clients for my social media marketing business.
Is it really possible to make money blogging?
The short answer is, Yes. However, to be successful at it, I recommend getting some training from successful bloggers.
This course changed my blog from a hobby to a money-earning business.
She only offers her course only ONCE a year (and for five days only!), so be sure to get on the waitlist now.
#4 – Network with other work at home moms
Building a network of supporters is important during your first year working from home. In fact, doing some type of networking daily should be a part of your routine.
It may mean joining some online groups like Mom Bloggers Club, Bloggy Moms, voiceBoks or Cafe Moms. For me, the friendships I gained from these groups were invaluable during my first few years at home. In fact, a few friendships led to business opportunities which became quite profitable.
The goal is to find support among other women who are going through or have been through, what you are now experiencing. They can offer guidance, comfort, and advice that will help your journey to be easier.
#5 – Keep developing yourself
Never stop learning and developing. If you’ve decided on blogging for business, then read all you can about how to blog. If you’re starting a home business, take free courses on how to get started at your local Chamber of Commerce or Small Business Development Center. If you’ve decided on venturing out in direct sales, thoroughly study your company’s training materials and become an expert in it.
Continually get better in your field and become an expert. It will help you in business and in life.
By implementing these 5 steps during your first year at home you improve your chances of being a successful work at home mom.
