Ever heard of the saying, you can’t be all things to all people? It’s true in life and in social media marketing as well.
In trying to build a large network and reach as many ideal clients/readers/followers as you can, it is possible to spread yourself too thin to be effective.
Let me explain…
Early on in my business, I had a client who came to me for social media marketing assistance. She had developed a large presence on Facebook and loved networking and building relationships on that platform. However, she had been unable to generate enough sales and was now looking for help in monetizing her social media marketing efforts.
At that time, I was still of the mindset that successful entrepreneurs needed to be active and visible on as many social media sites as possible.
So, my recommendation to her was that she needed to get active on Twitter and build her followers. She could then drive them to her products pages and generate sales, because I was having great success on Twitter. Then we could move to the next platform and…blah, blah, blah.
She was hesitant (very hesitant) to make a switch, and in the end, despite all of the evidence I presented, she decided to go a different route.
What I had missed was the fact that she was already very successful in building relationships on one social media platform and she enjoyed that platform.
What she really needed from me was help in creating a strategy to turn those potential customers into paying customers. Something I was skilled to do, but did not recognize the opportunity at the time.
Fast-forward to today and now I preach a different message. You don’t need to have a presence on every social media site in order to be successful in business. In fact, you can build a powerful presence that pays on only one platform by using these five simple tips:
Tip #1 – Determine which social sites are working for you and which are not
Start by checking your stats. Where do you see the most engagement? Where have you built the best relationships? Where are you seeing the most referrals? It’s more than just the numbers – go where you can get the biggest bang for your buck.
Tip #2 – Focus on the platform where you’ll get results
Once you’ve reviewed the stats, focus in on the social media site that will get you the best results. Your goal is to become the go-to source for your followers on your business topic. Work to build relationships and offer tremendous value that they can only get from you. Promote your followers by sharing their content, responding to their posts, and seeking their input.
Tip #3 – Master your social engagement style
Here is where you identify the various ways you get your followers engaged and which methods work best. Are they responding to the smart questions you pose – ones that are entertaining, easy to answer, and elicit short responses? Are you seeking their feedback or advice? Do you allow them to promote themselves on your site?
Identify the style that works best for your audience and master it. Keep the engagement ongoing and you’ll soon reap the benefits.
Tip #4 – Connect, Share, Respond, Build
Seek out those in your industry that you would want as a mentor. Connect with them on their social media site and interact with them by responding to their messages. Share their content with your followers and build a great network.
Tip #5 – Keep it Fresh
Provide your audience updated content that entertains, educates and empowers. Include personal stories, videos, or photos; include the purpose or ‘why’ behind the content you offer; and encourage them to identify takeaways or to take action.
By following these tips, you exhibit your skills, position yourself as an authority in your field, and build trusting relationships, thus maximizing your social media presence.
